We’re happy to report that construction is still going strong at our school for the deaf in Uvira, DR Congo. Director Pililo reports that if we continue at this pace, we should be able to move into the new facility by the end of October. Pray with us that we’ll be able to keep up the pace and stay on task.
Further north, in the Kivu Province, we’re not seeing enough tranquility to go forward with a Bible camp for deaf church leaders in the city of Bukavu. Director Nanza reports that the region is still not safe enough for attendees to travel to a conference. We’ll postpone for this summer and pray for an opportunity next year.
Director Yves has returned to Chad from the Bible conference for the deaf in Haindé, Benin.
The conference was a great success, and the attendees said that they really appreciated the in-depth teaching. The man who developed the Haindé center for the deaf is Victor Vodonou, an old student of my father’s. He says that the region is steeped in witchcraft and superstition. When the Benin government tried to bring piped water and electricity into the area, the locals fought back against the progress by cutting power lines and water lines. When the Chinese tried to build a major roadway to connect Haindé to the country’s capitol, the locals cursed it and when the endless rain prevented the Chinese from completing the road, the superstitious villagers praised their idols for preventing the progress. Truly a dark place! Pray for Victor and his wife as they shine the light of the Gospel into a region steeped in witchcraft and superstition.
