After 20+ hours of plane rides, we arrived in Kigali, Rwanda and spent the night at a mission house.

In 1994, Rwanda was the scene of a bloody tribal genocide between the Hutus and the Tutsis that killed hundreds of thousands of Rwandans while the United Nations stood by doing little to intervene (watch movie “Hotel Rwanda“). Today, because of forgiveness and solid leadership, Rwanda is healing and the country is bristling with growth, commerce and restoration. We weren’t sure what to expect since it was our first time into Rwanda, but it was hard not to fall in love with the country. Although it lacked many of the conveniences and luxuries of the West, the country had a charm and friendliness that made us want to stay longer.

We spent the night at a mission called Moucecore. The next morning, we took the 6-hour drive to Bukavu, DRC. The countryside of Rwanda is striking, with rolling hills, deep valleys, dense jungles and small towns scattered throughout. We knew we didn’t have to get too far off the road to see wildlife.
